Breastfeeding promotes better health for mothers and children alike. (We) aim to ‘Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding’. Breastfeeding can bring huge benefits to the health and welfare of babies and to maternal health. We aim to bring this about by focusing on good nutrition, poverty reduction and food security. Increasing breastfeeding to near-universal levels could save more than 700,000 lives every year, the majority being children under six months. Furthermore, costs associated with NOT breastfeeding amount to 79.32 million rupees in India in a day! The extra costs of not breastfeeding in India can amount to 5,000 to 9,000 rupees per child per month!
‘Empowering Parents’ requires relevant, up-to-date information, education, and a supportive environment where mothers can feel empowered and supported to breastfeed, and by removing the barriers to create an enabling environment to breastfeeding, we ‘Enable Breastfeeding'.
Unfortunately, in India, less than 50% of children are breastfed within an hour of birth due to a variety of problems, like difficulty in latching on, breast engorgement, poor technique, etc., whereas the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months stands at 55%, a number that is quite horrifying when compared globally. Early initiation of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding can prevent nearly 99,499 deaths of children every year due to diarrhoea and pneumonia.
India lacks behind in spreading awareness among the new mothers about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding and nursing. Doctors hardly talk about the proper way of breastfeeding, be it the position, the adequacy of the milk produced or when to stop feeding. We have developed this website so that mothers can get up-to-date information, watch videos to learn the breastfeeding skills and get the support of lactation consultants and encouragement from other parents.
